Hazel’s Homekeeping Guide

What I Clean First When the Kitchen Starts Working Harder

September 11, 2026

When the kitchen gets busier, the first thing I clean is not always the thing that looks dirtiest. I clean the surfaces that change how the room functions. That usually means the counter, the sink, and the places where people set things down on the way through.

Hazel wipes a kitchen counter beside a Botanic cleanser bottle while lunch containers and a cloth sit near the sink.

A kitchen that is working harder usually needs more than a general wipe. It needs the parts of the room that affect the next meal, the next snack, and the next thing somebody needs to carry out the door. If I start in the wrong place, the room can still look busy even after I have cleaned it.

Start with the counter that gets used the most

Pick the surface that collects the most traffic. That may be the stretch nearest the sink, the landing spot for backpacks and papers, or the section where breakfast and lunch prep happen. Clean that first. Once the main working surface is clear, the kitchen starts feeling useful again.

Then clean the sink

The sink tends to define whether a kitchen feels reset. Even when the rest of the room is fine, a sink full of dishes or a basin with visible residue makes the room feel behind. Clear it, rinse it, and wipe it so the next thing going into the room feels less like a delay and more like a continuation.

Wipe the touchpoints last

Handles, drawer pulls, appliance fronts, and the small landing zones near the kitchen edge are what make the room feel used. Those are the places I would finish with, once the working surfaces are already handled. A Botanic All-Purpose Cleaner Tablet bottle belongs naturally in that cleanup sequence because it handles the kind of daily kitchen reset that happens between one meal and the next.

Leave the room ready for the next round

The kitchen does not need to be perfect to be ready. It just needs the surfaces that matter most to be clean enough to use without hesitation. That is the part I care about when the room starts working harder. Not display. Readiness.

With care,

Hazel
