The Fall Textiles I Wash Before I Let the Season Settle In
September 21, 2026
The first cool stretch of fall makes people want to reach for blankets and heavier layers before those things are really ready to use. I prefer to wash the fall textiles first, while the shift is still new, so the season starts with clean blankets, fresh pillow covers, and layers that do not carry last year into this one.
This is not about washing everything at once. It is about choosing the textiles that will actually get used and getting them ready before the house settles into colder evenings. That small bit of work pays off every time someone reaches for a throw and it feels clean instead of merely available.
Start with the pieces people reach for first
Blankets, throws, bed layers, and the covers that sit on the couch or the reading chair are usually the most worth washing. They get used quickly once the weather turns, and they are the items most likely to make the season feel fresh if they come back clean.
Wash the layers that will sit close to the face
Pillow covers and anything that ends up near skin or hair deserve attention before they are pulled back into service. A clean layer on the sofa or the bed changes the feeling of the whole room more than most people expect.
Use the wash day to reset the laundry area too
When I am already sorting fall textiles, I like the laundry room to look as ready as the basket does. That is where a Botanic laundry bottle belongs naturally. It is part of the work, not a decoration, and it keeps the wash day feeling organized rather than improvised.
Let the season begin with the right stack
There is no virtue in leaving the good blanket hidden in a closet until the house is already cold. Wash the useful things first, fold them well, and let fall start with textiles you are happy to touch.
With care,
Hazel
